Cyber police warn of Raksha Bandhan online gift scams

Cybersecurity experts and police in India, including the Nagpur Cyber Police, have issued warnings regarding widespread online scams targeting citizens during the Raksha Bandhan festival. Fraudsters are utilizing emotional appeals and the promise of attractive discounts or free gifts to compromise bank accounts and personal data.

Common tactics include sending suspicious WhatsApp or SMS messages containing malicious APK files, such as ‘Raksha Bandhan Greeting APK’ or ‘Festival Gift APK’. These files can compromise mobile devices and sensitive information upon download. Scammers also create fraudulent shopping websites that mimic legitimate brands like Amazon or Flipkart to deceive customers into making payments for non-existent goods.

Other methods involve phishing links promising ‘special cashback’ or ‘free gift vouchers’ that require users to scan QR codes or fulfill UPI requests. Some scams pressure victims to share personal details or download apps by claiming offers are only valid for a limited time. Authorities advise the public to avoid clicking unknown links, refrain from downloading suspicious files, and verify the identity of anyone requesting urgent money transfers via phone.
