Online sports platforms, including football betting sites, have expanded their features with real‑time data, mobile access and enhanced security measures, creating a digital ecosystem that draws millions of users worldwide. At the same time, the rapid digital transformation of clubs, stadiums and governing bodies has turned the sports sector into a high‑value target for cybercriminals.

A Darktrace report finds that 84 % of professional sports organisations experienced at least one cyber incident in the past year, with average losses of $169,000 per incident and cumulative damages reaching up to $1.7 million for repeatedly attacked entities. Modern stadiums operate like “smart cities,” linking ticketing, Wi‑Fi, retail and critical building systems, which attackers can compromise through weak network segmentation or third‑party vendor credentials. The risk is expected to rise ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as the event’s visibility expands the attack surface across multiple countries. Experts urge continuous vendor vetting, stronger network segmentation and multi‑factor authentication to shift from reactive responses to structural cyber resilience.
