France supermarkets hit by cyberattack targeting refrigeration systems

A large-scale cyberattack has targeted the refrigeration systems of hundreds of supermarkets across France, causing temperatures in connected fridges and freezers to rise to 50 degrees Celsius. The attack, which occurred overnight between October 11 and 12, reportedly manipulated remote defrost cycles, leading to the widespread spoilage of fresh and frozen food and, in some instances, triggering fires.

Major retail chains including Intermarché, Coopérative U, Carrefour, and Monoprix were affected. Intermarché reported that approximately 150 of its stores were impacted for about six hours, while Coopérative U confirmed disruptions in around 100 outlets. The Paris prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into the incident, and French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has ordered the National Cybersecurity Agency (ANSSI) to lead the probe.

Preliminary investigations suggest the attackers exploited vulnerabilities in refrigeration management software provided by the Danish company Danfoss. Danfoss acknowledged the incidents, noting that the affected units were running outdated firmware that no longer received security updates. While the primary impact was in France, authorities are coordinating with European partners as similar suspicious activities have been noted in Belgium and the Netherlands. Intermarché CEO Thierry Cotillard estimated that nationwide losses could reach tens of millions of euros in a single day.
