Cyberattacks on refrigeration systems expose global food supply risks
Cyberattacks targeting commercial refrigeration systems in France have caused significant food loss by manipulating temperatures and defrost settings. In October 2026, hackers compromised systems at over 700 supermarkets, with some equipment reaching temperatures as high as 50°C. Experts, including Vincent Strubel of France’s National Cybersecurity Agency (ANSSI), noted that the breaches resulted from elementary security failures, such as direct internet exposure and weak passwords, rather than complex software vulnerabilities.
Research from Forescout’s Vedere Labs has identified 12,976 internet-exposed refrigeration service observations across 6,017 public IP addresses in 99 countries. These exposed interfaces pose a critical risk to industries reliant on temperature-controlled environments, including hospitals, pharmacies, agricultural facilities, and pharmaceutical supply chains.
Security analysts warn that the vulnerability of these IoT-connected devices serves as a warning for regions like the Asia-Pacific, particularly import-dependent hubs like Singapore. The reliance on legacy devices with outdated firmware makes many industrial control systems difficult to patch, leaving them susceptible to remote commands that can cause physical operational disruption.
