Cyberattacks target businesses and mutuals in Spain and Argentina
Separate cyberattacks in Spain and Argentina have resulted in significant financial losses for businesses and financial institutions.
In Spain, a company in Salamanca lost 46,801 euros following a Business Email Compromise (BEC) attack. Criminals gained access to corporate communications, monitored correspondence to understand invoicing patterns, and falsified bank details on an invoice to divert a transfer. The Guardia Civil arrested two men in connection with the fraud, noting that funds were moved to accounts in Croatia, Hungary, and Lithuania.
In Argentina, authorities are investigating a sophisticated digital intrusion targeting three mutual associations in the Santa Fe province, specifically in Esperanza, Franck, and San Carlos Centro. The attack resulted in unauthorized transfers totaling approximately 150 million pesos from accounts linked to Banco Coinag. Prosecutor Alejandro Benítez stated that the incident was not a social engineering or telephone scam, but a direct digital hack into the systems, possibly involving malicious software.
