Europe faces wave of cyberattacks targeting food supply and blood banks FAST-MOVING

A series of sophisticated cyberattacks has targeted critical food infrastructure and medical supplies across Europe. In October, attackers manipulated digital thermostats in hundreds of French supermarkets, raising temperatures to over 50 degrees Celsius and causing massive food spoilage. A second wave of attacks occurred in early November, affecting retailers in Belgium, Sweden, Luxembourg, Ireland, Estonia, and the Netherlands.

Beyond supermarkets, the attacks extended to healthcare infrastructure. In France, three cold storage facilities housing blood supplies were targeted by remote manipulation of temperature controls. While alarms allowed technicians to intervene before supplies were lost, the incident highlighted the vulnerability of essential medical services.

Security experts and the European Union have expressed concern that these incidents represent a deliberate attempt to disrupt food supply chains and undermine consumer confidence. While some pro-Russian hacker groups have claimed responsibility, official investigations are ongoing. Intelligence experts have suggested that Russian officials may be recruiting individuals for sabotage within NATO nations, though the Kremlin has denied any involvement.
