Cybercrime causes billions in losses as U.S. strengthens digital defenses
Cybercrime continues to pose significant financial and operational risks to businesses, with reported incidents in Vermont alone totaling 86 crimes and $13.1 million in losses for 2025. Analysis of FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center records indicates that business email compromise (BEC) is a dominant threat, with nearly 25,000 victims accounting for over $3 billion in losses in 2025.
In response to these escalating threats, the White House issued Executive Order 14390 in March 2026 to strengthen digital defenses and disrupt transnational cybercriminal networks. Additionally, the U.S. Congress is addressing the vulnerability of smaller enterprises through the Small Business Cybersecurity Assistance Evaluation Act of 2026, reflecting growing concerns regarding the economic impact of cyberattacks.
