Cybercrime in Vietnam causes 40 trillion VND in damages

Cybercrime and fraudulent activities in Vietnam have caused nearly 40 trillion VND in damages between 2020 and 2025, involving more than 24,000 incidents. In 2024 alone, the country recorded over 6,000 online fraud cases resulting in losses exceeding 12,000 billion VND.

Experts at a recent information security workshop noted that criminals are increasingly using artificial intelligence to enhance the sophistication of their attacks. A primary concern is deepfake technology, which allows for the creation of fraudulent images, videos, and voices that are difficult for victims to distinguish from reality. Some commercial tools can now generate real-time deepfake videos for approximately 35 USD per month, making high-level technical attacks more accessible to bad actors.

Beyond impersonating relatives or trusted individuals, cybercriminals are also attempting to exploit facial data to bypass electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) authentication processes, distribute malware via mobile accessibility permissions, and seize control of smart devices.
