Cybercrime threats rise in Ghana and Guyana

Cybersecurity authorities in Ghana and Guyana are reporting significant increases in cyber-attack activity and financial losses.

In Ghana, the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) reported that between January and September 2026, 4,938 cybersecurity incidents occurred, resulting in estimated financial losses exceeding 209 million Ghana cedis. This marks a substantial increase from 2025, when the authority recorded 4,604 incidents and losses of over 22.5 million Ghana cedis. Dr. Divine Selase Agbeti, Director-General of the CSA, noted that the figures likely underrepresent the true scale of the problem and highlighted online fraud, cyberbullying, and sextortion as growing threats. He also noted that some criminal networks have relocated to the Volta Region to evade law enforcement.

In Guyana, the Guyana Police Force reported approximately 1.1 million cyber-attack attempts and threat events during the first six months of 2026. According to Martina Johnson, a public relations consultant for the police, the country’s expanding economy has made it a “prime target for hackers globally.” The data, provided by partner Brava Fortinet, shows a sharp rise compared to 2007, when fewer than 500,000 attacks were recorded for the entire year. Home Affairs Minister Oneidge Walrond emphasized the need for a strategy focused on institutional resilience and rapid recovery rather than just post-attack investigation.
