Cybercriminals deploy WhatsApp and parking fee phishing scams

Authorities and consumer advocates are warning of two distinct digital fraud schemes targeting users through deceptive messaging.

One tactic involves fraudulent emails designed to mimic WhatsApp notifications. These messages claim a relative has a new phone number due to a broken device. Once contact is established via a provided link, scammers create a sense of urgency to solicit money for alleged emergencies or unpaid bills through bank transfers or prepaid vouchers.

A second scheme utilizes phishing SMS messages claiming unpaid parking fees are owed. These messages often include precise details, such as dates and reference numbers, to appear legitimate. In Denmark, criminals have specifically misused the name of the parking company Apcoa to increase credibility. Security analysts have identified at least 75 fraudulent websites used in these attacks. Victims who enter their details on these sites have reported unauthorized bank withdrawals, often involving foreign currencies, suggesting international criminal involvement.
