Cybercriminals target professionals via LinkedIn and WhatsApp scams

Authorities in Singapore and Belgium have issued warnings regarding sophisticated digital scams targeting professionals and investors.

In Singapore, scammers are using fake job listings on LinkedIn to steal approximately 10 million euros in cryptocurrency. The scheme involves recruiters posing as representatives of crypto firms, conducting interviews via video calls, and directing candidates to fraudulent programming tests. These tests download malware onto the candidate's device, which can grant attackers access to employer systems, allowing them to bypass security measures and intercept cryptocurrency transfers.

In Belgium, the Financial Services and Markets Authority (FSMA) is warning against fraudulent WhatsApp groups. Scammers use social media advertisements to lure victims with promises of high returns driven by artificial intelligence. These criminals often commit identity theft by using the names and logos of reputable financial institutions, such as KBC Bank's Bolero and GuardCap Asset Management, to gain trust. Victims are often pressured to invest in schemes or download deceptive applications.
