Cybercrime wave targets banks and services in Germany and Austria

A widespread wave of cyberattacks and phishing scams is targeting consumers across Germany and Austria, utilizing various deceptive tactics to steal sensitive personal and financial data.

Financial institutions are major targets. Scammers are impersonating Sparkasse to steal online banking credentials via fake S-pushTAN verification messages, and targeting Volksbanken Raiffeisenbanken customers with threats of QR-code blocks if contact data is not updated. In one severe case in Langen, a senior citizen was defrauded of nearly 200,000 euros after criminals posed as bank employees claiming her account had been hacked.

Other scams exploit service providers and public services. Phishing emails are impersonating Asfinag to demand fraudulent vignette payments, Deutsche Telekom to offer fake WLAN router discounts, and the Deutschlandticket program with promises of free e-bikes. Additionally, job seekers are being targeted by Android malware disguised as interview apps, such as ‘MyInterview’, which can gain control over mobile devices.

Experts and consumer protection agencies advise users to remain vigilant, avoid clicking on unsolicited links, and ignore messages that use high-pressure tactics or lack personal greetings.
