Cybercriminals use urgency and impersonation to execute fraud
Cybercriminals are increasingly utilizing psychological pressure and artificial urgency to execute fraudulent schemes. These tactics are designed to prevent potential victims from taking the time to verify information.
In one specific scam targeting business owners, fraudsters impersonate Google representatives. They claim that a company's Google Business Profile is at risk of being deleted or losing visibility unless a paid ‘Google badge’ is purchased. The scammers use mobile numbers to appear legitimate and direct victims to fraudulent websites that mimic official Google pages to steal banking credentials.
General fraud patterns also include high-pressure messages regarding bank account suspensions or urgent regulatory requirements. Experts advise that the more a message demands immediate action, the more likely it is to be a scam. To avoid falling victim, individuals should hang up and contact institutions directly using verified contact information found on official documents or the back of bank cards, rather than using numbers provided in suspicious messages.
