Cybersecurity alert: Malicious online ads scam users with fake tech support warnings
Cybersecurity researchers have identified a widespread online advertising scam designed to deceive users by simulating device infections. These malicious advertisements appear on various popular websites, including those covering weather, sports, and real estate.
When a user clicks on the ad, the computer—whether running Windows or Mac—appears to freeze completely. An alarming message occupies the entire screen, claiming a ‘severe infection’ and instructing the user to call a specific technical support number. The scam employs several tactics to appear authentic, such as hiding the browser address bar, disabling the escape key, and slowing down the browser to create a sense of urgency.
Victims who call the fraudulent number are pressured to pay large sums of money, provide remote access to their computers, or disclose sensitive personal information. While digital security firms have successfully blocked access to this content in recent investigations, the total number of global victims remains unknown.
