Cybersecurity alert: Phishing scams impersonating mObywatel traffic fines

Cybersecurity experts are warning of a sophisticated phishing scam targeting users via SMS messages regarding alleged traffic fines. The scammers impersonate the mObywatel service to gain credibility, directing victims to fraudulent websites that mimic official government portals.

The scheme typically involves a message claiming a speeding fine has been issued and requires immediate verification or payment. Once on the fake site, users are prompted to enter vehicle registration details and, subsequently, their credit card information. While the displayed fine may appear to be a small amount, such as 50 PLN, the actual transaction authorized through the bank's confirmation code can be for a significantly higher value.

Experts from CERT Polska and CyberRescue emphasize that these criminals use psychological pressure, such as threats of legal consequences or limited timeframes, to force quick, unthinking actions. Authorities remind the public that official traffic fines are not issued via SMS links and advise users to carefully check the recipient and amount in their banking apps before authorizing any transaction.
