Cybersecurity alert: Smishing scams targeting major online accounts

Cybercriminals are utilizing smishing—fraudulent text messages—to target users of platforms such as Netflix, Amazon, and Facebook. These scams involve sending urgent, false security alerts claiming unauthorized access to an account from a different location to induce panic.

The fraudulent messages typically contain a link intended to lead users to a fake website that mimics the legitimate service. Once users enter their credentials to “verify” their identity or “block” access, their usernames and passwords are stolen by attackers.

To mitigate these risks, experts recommend ignoring links sent via SMS or WhatsApp, verifying account security by using official apps or typing web addresses directly into browsers, and enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) on all platforms.
