Cybersecurity alerts issued regarding Gmail-based fraud

Security experts and government agencies are warning of various fraudulent schemes utilizing Gmail accounts to deceive users.

In Latin America, ESET researchers identified a sophisticated investment scam network. The operation uses sponsored advertisements within Gmail inboxes, cloned media websites, and AI-driven voice cloning to solicit money. Attackers impersonate legitimate financial firms, such as VT Markets, and use manipulated images of journalists or business leaders to promote unrealistic returns on low initial investments.

Separately, the Department of Housing and the Public Housing Administration have issued alerts regarding phishing emails sent from Gmail addresses. These fraudulent communications impersonate government officials to solicit personal information by promising housing vouchers or relocation alternatives. Authorities clarified that official communications will only come from @vivienda.pr.gov or @avp.pr.gov domains, and urged citizens to verify the authenticity of any digital correspondence.
