Cybersecurity costs and investment trends rise for SMEs and European firms
Recent industry reports highlight a growing financial and strategic emphasis on cybersecurity among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and European corporations.
A Hiscox study involving 6,800 cybersecurity professionals in the US, UK, and Europe found that cyber incidents now represent a recurring cost for SMEs with fewer than 250 employees. On average, these incidents cost organizations approximately $52,000 annually and cause about 32 hours of operational downtime per successful attack. Beyond technical recovery, 32% of respondents noted that incidents delayed growth plans, while 48% identified customer reputation and trust as their primary concern.
Complementing this, a Kaspersky report indicates that 69% of European companies plan to increase cybersecurity investments over the next 12 months. The research suggests a paradigm shift where digital security is viewed as a vital strategic function rather than a mere technical cost. Key investment priorities include data protection to comply with regulations like GDPR and the reduction of financial risks associated with ransomware and data breaches.
