Cybersecurity education and practical hacking initiatives in the Netherlands

Cybersecurity education in the Netherlands is evolving through both professional training paths and academic practical applications. For career changers, certifications like CompTIA Security+ serve as foundational steps, though experts note that short-term bootcamps often require significant additional self-study and practical experience to meet employer standards.

At Leiden University, computer science students have transitioned from informal hacking sessions to an official course titled ‘Capture the Flag: Cybersecurity in Practice’. Working alongside the university’s Security Operations Center (SOC), students identify vulnerabilities within the institution's IT environment under a responsible disclosure policy.

This collaboration provides the SOC with a fresh perspective, as students often identify additional locations of known vulnerabilities that daily IT professionals might overlook. The program aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world digital security needs.
