SMEs face rising cybersecurity threats and high incident rates

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are increasingly targeted by cyberattacks, with recent data highlighting a significant vulnerability in this sector. According to a Kaspersky study, 86% of SMEs experienced at least one cybersecurity incident in the past year. Common attack vectors include phishing, which affected 20% of these businesses, software vulnerability exploitation (17%), and external access issues (16%).

Other reports indicate that while 84% of small businesses use antivirus software, this alone is insufficient to protect against sophisticated threats like credential theft, human error, or phishing. A survey by Cybermalveillance.gouv.fr found that 80% of small businesses feel unprepared or are unsure of their readiness for a cyberattack.

Experts suggest that effective protection for smaller entities does not always require enterprise-level tools. Essential measures include multi-factor authentication, strong password policies, regular data backups, phishing awareness training, and secure Wi-Fi configurations.
