Cybersecurity experiment reveals vulnerability in AI vehicle tracking

Cybersecurity expert Bill Swearingen demonstrated a method to make vehicles invisible to AI-based traffic surveillance systems during the Def Con conference in Las Vegas. The experiment, titled ‘noRecognition’, utilized a computer-generated geometric pattern applied as stickers to a 2009 Toyota Yaris.

While the car remained clearly visible to the human eye, the automated tracking software failed to identify or register the vehicle. The test highlights potential vulnerabilities in urban monitoring architectures, showing that specific visual patterns can prevent algorithms from detecting objects even when they are being recorded by standard cameras.
