Cybersecurity expert warns of radicalization risks from online ‘pedophile hunter’ groups
Cybersecurity expert Yavor Kolev has warned that online groups identifying as ‘pedophile hunters’ pose a significant risk of radicalizing children and adolescents. These digital formations, which have emerged since approximately 2020, often provide young people with a deceptive sense of belonging and social approval.
Kolev noted that interest in such groups among students has been observed during internet safety campaigns. He linked the admiration some youth have for these structures to recent violent incidents in Plovdiv. To combat these trends, Kolev urged the Ministry of Interior to reform its cybercrime strategy by ensuring every district administration has trained, professional personnel capable of handling such cases.
Additionally, Kolev referenced his past operational work in 2001 against the Blood and Honor organization. While he noted that spreading Nazi ideology is illegal, he clarified that the organization itself is not currently banned unless specific acts of violence are proven. He also highlighted a Europol report indicating that minors are increasingly being recruited for illegal activities, including cyberattacks and drug distribution.
