Michoacán: 12 arrested in extortion ring targeting agricultural sectors

Mexican authorities have arrested 12 individuals suspected of operating an extortion ring targeting the agricultural and livestock sectors in Michoacán. The operation, part of the National Strategy against Extortion, involved 11 simultaneous search warrants in the municipalities of Uruapan and Ziracuaretio.

Among those detained is Cristian Maximiliano 'N', also known as 'X1', who is allegedly linked to a cell of the Los Caballeros Templarios criminal organization. The group reportedly extorted producers, merchants, transporters, and packers within the avocado, livestock, and meat industries, demanding payments in both cash and goods.

During the raids, security forces seized six firearms, vehicles, a signal jammer, tactical equipment, narcotics, and cash. The security concerns surrounding these extortion activities previously led to a temporary suspension of avocado exports from Michoacán to the United States, though commercialization has since resumed following increased security deployments.
