Cybersecurity experts warn of rising digital fraud and credential theft

Cybersecurity experts are warning of evolving digital threats, specifically regarding the reliability of digital evidence and the rise of credential theft.

ESET researcher Mario Micucci warns that screenshots are becoming increasingly unreliable as evidence for payments, reservations, or conversations. The availability of generative AI and other digital tools allows for the rapid creation of convincing forgeries. Because screenshots can be cropped, edited, or entirely fabricated, they lack the evidentiary weight of original system logs or transaction identifiers.

Simultaneously, a report from Kaspersky highlights a strategic shift in cyberattacks. Instead of relying on easily detectable malware, attackers are increasingly using stolen legitimate credentials to evade security controls. One of the most frequent tactics identified is password guessing, which accounts for 34.8% of detected attack indicators, often succeeding due to the use of weak or reused passwords within organizations.
