Cybersecurity experts warn of rising online scams in the U.S

As part of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, experts are highlighting the increasing prevalence of online scams, which are being exacerbated by the rise of artificial intelligence. A 2025 Pew survey indicates that 73% of adults in the United States have been victims of an online scam or attack.

Two prominent types of fraud include recovery scams and romance scams. Recovery scams target individuals who have previously lost money, with fraudsters posing as government agents, lawyers, or private investigators to offer help in recouping funds for an upfront fee. These scammers often demand unusual payment methods such as cryptocurrency, gift cards, or gold.

Romance scams involve criminals establishing fast-paced digital relationships through social media or dating apps to manipulate victims. An AARP report from November 2025 notes that nearly 1 in 10 adults aged 50 or older have been targeted by such schemes.
