Cybersecurity experts warn of rising threats to IoT and personal data

Cybersecurity experts are warning that individuals and organizations are increasingly vulnerable to sophisticated digital attacks. A significant concern involves the Internet of Things (IoT), where connected devices such as smart cameras, appliances, and thermostats can serve as entry points for hackers. A recent example cited includes a cyberattack on refrigerators in French supermarkets, where attackers remotely activated defrost functions, causing massive food spoilage. Such incidents are increasingly viewed as potential components of hybrid warfare.

Experts note that cybercrime has evolved from isolated individuals into highly organized entities that operate like corporations, complete with CEOs and human resources departments. These groups frequently use artificial intelligence to develop malware, often outpacing the defensive capabilities of security professionals and law enforcement. While the primary motive for 90% of attacks is financial gain, the risks extend to physical safety and privacy.

To mitigate these risks, specialists recommend frequent password changes, enabling multi-factor authentication, and ensuring all devices are regularly updated. In Italy, there has been a notable surge in attacks targeting public administration during the first quarter of 2025.
