Cybersecurity fundamentals: encryption protocols and employee training

Cybersecurity involves both technical protocols and human preparedness to protect sensitive data from theft. Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificates, and the more advanced Transport Layer Security (TLS), serve as essential encryption protocols. These technologies convert data into unreadable characters, ensuring that even if information is intercepted by cybercriminals, it remains protected. While non-sensitive sites like personal blogs may operate without them, e-commerce platforms require these certificates to secure user information such as credit card details.

Complementing technical encryption is Security Awareness Training (SAT), which addresses the risk of human error in digital security. Because many data breaches are driven by human mistakes, such as clicking malicious links, SAT programs aim to build a ‘human firewall.’ These training modules typically cover phishing simulations, password hygiene, social engineering tactics, and data privacy regulations to help employees recognize and prevent cyber threats.
