Cybersecurity reports highlight rise in targeted malware and endpoint threats
Cybersecurity researchers have identified a targeted malware campaign involving the Minecraft platform. Using the SugarSMP name, attackers distribute malicious modpacks designed to steal sensitive data. The malware, known as ‘SparkStealer’, targets browser data, passwords, cryptocurrency wallets, and content from applications such as Discord, Steam, and Telegram. To evade detection, operators have reportedly used social engineering to remove warnings from the internet and temporarily replaced malware with harmless files.
Separately, WatchGuard Technologies’ Global Threat Report for the first half of 2026 highlights a significant shift in cyberattack tactics. While network attacks have decreased by 79%, new malware detected on endpoints has surged by over 2,000%. The report indicates that threat actors are moving away from high-volume campaigns toward more selective, low-intensity attacks. These attackers are increasingly utilizing automation, ‘Malware-as-a-Service’, and artificial intelligence to create customized payloads designed to bypass traditional security controls.
