Cybersecurity reports reveal rising global scams and account breaches
Recent cybersecurity reports highlight a significant rise in global digital threats. Bitdefender’s 2026 Global Scam Intelligence Report reveals that online fraud losses reached nearly $500 million USD in 2025. The study, which surveyed 7,000 consumers, found that 14% of individuals fell victim to a scam in the past year, noting that younger generations are twice as likely to be targeted compared to older populations.
Simultaneously, data from Surfshark indicates a massive scale of account compromises. Between April and June 2026, approximately 102 million accounts were breached globally. The United States recorded the highest number of compromised accounts at 29.8 million, followed by France, Poland, Brazil, and the United Kingdom.
Europe has emerged as a high-risk region, with the number of breaches in the continent surpassing North America. Italy ranks 16th globally, with 497,400 accounts compromised in the last quarter. Despite a recent quarterly decline, Italy holds the highest number of compromised accounts in Southern Europe since 2004, totaling 345.9 million accounts, including 84.7 million unique email addresses and 298.1 million passwords.
