Cybersecurity risks rise for small and medium enterprises

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are increasingly targeted by cybercriminals who exploit their limited financial resources and weaker security controls. Research from Kaspersky indicates that 78% of South African SMEs experienced at least one cybersecurity incident over the past year.

Common vulnerabilities in SMEs include fewer IT resources, delayed software updates, and limited security expertise. These attacks can lead to operational shutdowns, stolen customer data, and severe reputational damage.

Furthermore, many businesses mistakenly believe that cloud storage serves as a complete disaster recovery plan. While cloud infrastructure provides resilience, it is not a substitute for a formal recovery strategy. Effective disaster recovery requires understanding recovery time objectives (RTOs) and ensuring that all interdependent systems, such as identity services and networking, can be restored in the correct sequence to resume operations.
