Cybersecurity risks rise for travelers using public Wi-Fi

Travelers face significant cybersecurity risks when using public Wi-Fi at hotels, airports, and cafes. A study by web hosting company TransIP involving 1,052 Dutch users found that one in five people use public Wi-Fi for all their online activities, while only one in eight consistently use a VPN. Approximately two-thirds of users are considered to be taking risks during their holidays.

Microsoft has issued warnings regarding a sophisticated campaign involving Russian hackers who systematically infiltrate wireless networks at hotels and conference centers globally. Since May, these attackers have been compromising local networks to present fake login pages for services like Microsoft 365 or to trick users into installing malicious software.

Security experts note that while VPNs can encrypt traffic, they are not a universal solution. Some destinations, such as Belarus, Iraq, Iran, North Korea, and Turkmenistan, prohibit VPN use, while others like Turkey have implemented provider-level blocks. Additionally, free VPN applications may pose their own security risks.
