Cybersecurity risks threaten small business payroll and communications

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face significant cybersecurity risks, particularly regarding payroll software and business communications. Despite the myth that smaller companies are too insignificant to target, criminals frequently focus on payroll systems to steal sensitive personal and banking data for resale, fraud, or identity theft.

Reports indicate that in 2025, four out of five small businesses were victims of a breach, experiencing 350% more social engineering or impersonation attacks than large enterprises. Attack methods include hijacking salary deposits, encrypting payroll data for ransom, or threatening to leak salary information to damage staff relationships.

Furthermore, standard business communication tools like email often lack inherent privacy protections. Messages may travel through unencrypted servers, leaving data vulnerable to interception. Human error, such as clicking suspicious links or reusing passwords, remains a primary driver of security breaches, compounding the risks posed by technical vulnerabilities.
