Cybersecurity threats increasingly target German SMEs
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have become primary targets for cybercriminals due to their valuable data and relatively limited cybersecurity resources compared to large corporations. According to a BSI report in Germany, approximately 80 percent of 950 reported ransomware attacks targeted SMEs, with 72 percent of those cases involving data leaks or threats of data publication.
The economic impact is substantial; a Bitkom study indicates that theft, sabotage, and industrial espionage caused German companies approximately 289.2 billion euros in damages, with 70 percent of that total resulting from cyberattacks.
Compounding this risk is a growing difficulty in data recovery. While 57 percent of companies could restore at least 75 percent of their data in 2024, that figure has dropped to 39 percent. Despite 93 percent of executives identifying absolute data immutability as a critical requirement for backup storage, only 16 percent of IT managers currently utilize such environments, creating a significant security gap.
