Cybersecurity threats rise for industrial sectors and Italy

Recent cybersecurity reports highlight a growing threat landscape for industrial sectors and global organizations, with Italy emerging as a significant target.

In the Italian manufacturing sector, data manipulation has become a primary threat. Unlike traditional ransomware, this technique involves the silent alteration of operational data, such as security thresholds and sensor readings, which can lead to production defects and long-term compliance issues. Italy and Germany show a specific focus on these persistent operational manipulations.

Global trends indicate that while overall malware detections on industrial control systems (ICS) have decreased, the percentage of ICS systems targeted by ransomware is rising in most regions, including Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. These attacks often exploit legacy systems to cause operational disruptions.

Furthermore, global cyberattack volumes continue to climb. In July 2026, Italy ranked among the top five most targeted countries globally, accounting for 3% of all attacks. The education sector remains the most frequent target, followed by government and telecommunications. The rise of Generative AI is also noted as an emerging operational risk due to increased organizational exposure.
