Cybersecurity threats rise in Canada's digital restaurant industry

The rapid digital transformation of Canada’s restaurant industry has introduced significant cybersecurity risks. While technologies such as cloud-based point-of-sale systems and mobile ordering apps drive operational growth, they have also expanded the attack surface for hackers.

Data breaches pose a severe financial threat; in 2025, Canadian companies paid an average of $6.98 million per breach, with phishing-related incidents averaging $7.91 million. While attack volumes for small and medium-sized organizations showed a downward trend between 2022 and 2026, large organizations experienced a sharp increase in incidents.

Restaurants are considered prime targets due to the high volume of customer data processed daily, including credit card numbers, email addresses, and loyalty program details. The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security emphasizes the necessity of integrating cybersecurity into business processes to protect high-value information.
