Cybersecurity threats rise with WhatsApp spying and email scams
Cybersecurity experts are warning of rising digital threats, including unauthorized access to messaging apps and sophisticated business email compromise (BEC) attacks.
On WhatsApp, individuals can be monitored if an unauthorized person scans a QR code to link a secondary device to the user's account. Users can check for unrecognized connections by navigating to the ‘Linked devices’ section in the app settings and logging out of any suspicious devices. WhatsApp also offers a ‘locked chats’ feature for additional privacy.
Separately, the SI-CERT national cybersecurity response center has noted a significant increase in BEC attacks targeting companies and public institutions. These scams involve attackers impersonating executives, suppliers, or HR staff to manipulate financial transfers or steal sensitive data. In Slovenia, police handled cases involving 2.3 million euros in damages in 2024, following a much higher total of 5.7 million euros in the previous year.
