Cybersecurity warnings in Brazil and low-cost banking options in Portugal

In Brazil, cybersecurity expert Daniel Porta, CISO of DANRESA, has warned against the “R$ 0.01 Pix scam.” While receiving a micro-transfer does not grant a sender access to a recipient's bank account, it is used as a tool for social engineering. Criminals use these small transactions to establish a false sense of legitimacy, test active accounts, or confirm valid keys. By combining transaction data with information from social media or previous leaks, scammers can build more convincing fraudulent approaches.

In Portugal, regulated minimum banking service accounts allow individuals to maintain a current account and a debit card for a low annual cost. According to Banco de Portugal, banks are prohibited from charging more than 1% of the Social Support Index (IAS) for these essential services. By 2026, the maximum annual cost is projected to be 5.37 euros. These accounts include account opening, maintenance, and a debit card, though they do not allow for overdrafts.
