Santorini residents protest Blue Star Ferries winter schedule
Local authorities and professional associations in Santorini are protesting the newly announced winter ferry schedule for 2026–2027 provided by Blue Star Ferries. The Santorini Hotel Association and the Municipality of Thera have expressed strong opposition to the plan, citing several critical issues.
Key grievances include the complete lack of weekend connections between Santorini and the islands of Paros and Naxos, which effectively disconnects the island from its neighbors. Additionally, the cancellation of afternoon departures from Piraeus and the implementation of late-night or early-morning arrival and departure times have been criticized as exhausting and impractical for travelers.
Critics argue that these changes prioritize corporate profitability over the essential needs of residents. The schedule is reported to negatively impact access to healthcare services in Athens, student travel, professional obligations, and the ability of local sports teams to participate in regional competitions. Local groups are calling on the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and the government to revise the schedule to ensure reliable, dignified, and accessible maritime connections.
