Cycladic Art Museum to host lecture by Catherine McCormack

The Cycladic Art Museum will host art historian Catherine McCormack for a lecture titled ‘The Venus Trap: the enduring emptiness of the Venus archetype’ on Tuesday, September 15, at Cine Athenaea.

Drawing from the current Jeff Koons exhibition, ‘Venus of Lespugue’, McCormack will examine the Venus archetype within art history and Western visual culture. She will explore how this concept has shaped expectations of female identity, tracing its history from Paleolithic figurines and the theories of Marija Gimbutas to the Aphrodite of Knidos, Renaissance works by Botticelli, and Modernist reinterpretations that challenged the myth of ideal femininity.

McCormack is an author and art critic known for her work on feminism and visual culture, including the book ‘Women in the Picture: Women, Art and the Power of Looking’. The Jeff Koons exhibition remains open until September 28.
