Cycling calendar shifts with new 2027 season openers
The 2027 professional cycling season will feature new early-season options for riders, shifting the traditional focus away from the Tour Down Under as the sole early opener. The Vuelta Ciclista a Canarias, scheduled for January 14–17, 2027, will become the first event on the UCI calendar.
In Mexico, the cycling scene is seeing a resurgence, partly driven by the success of Isaac Del Toro. The MEX Tour returns to the calendar from January 19–23, 2027, alongside the introduction of a new one-day race, the Clásica de la República, on January 17. These events provide alternatives to the Tour Down Under, which remains scheduled for January 19–24.
For European riders, the Canary Islands offer a convenient alternative for early season training and racing. While the climb of Mount Teide is not currently part of the race route, organizer Noelia Pérez noted that the possibility of joining the WorldTour or changing dates remains an open discussion for the future.
