Cycling Initiatives Aid Refugees in the UK and Students in Canada
The Bike Project, a UK charity that refurbishes donated bicycles, has provided over 15,000 bikes to refugees and asylum seekers since its founding in 2013. Partnering with Cyclehoop, the charity received a sponsorship of 500 high‑quality D‑locks and benefited from a volunteer day at its Deptford site, where volunteers helped prepare bikes for distribution. The charity also runs programmes that have taught more than 800 women to ride and paired over 400 Bike Buddies with recipients.
In St. John’s, Newfoundland, École St. Matthews School has built a cycling culture by installing bike racks, a repair station and hosting an annual Bikefest. Funded through the Youth Harbour’s Now for Net Zero programme, the May 23, 2026 Bikefest attracted over 160 participants, including MP Tom Osborne and Education Minister Paul Dinn, showcasing the school’s commitment to active transport for children.
Globally, recreational cycling continues to expand as an accessible form of exercise and leisure. The rise in participation highlights benefits for health, mental well‑being and community building, while emphasizing the role of appropriate apparel in enhancing comfort and safety for riders of all ages.
