Cycling initiatives launched in Portugal and Spain to combat social isolation
New cycling-based community initiatives are being launched in Penafiel, Portugal, and Girona, Spain, to address social isolation and emotional well-being.
In Penafiel, the “Pedalar Sem Idade” (Cycling Without Age) project has begun in collaboration with Santa Casa da Misericórdia. The initiative uses adapted tricycles, known as trishaws, to transport elderly individuals or those with reduced mobility. Led by volunteers, the project aims to combat loneliness and promote social participation by allowing participants to experience the outdoors and engage with their community.
In Girona, the City Council and the University of Girona have launched “Pedalant en Xarxa,” a pilot program targeting young people aged 16 to 30. The program uses cycling to promote emotional well-being and healthy habits, specifically focusing on those facing social isolation or mild to moderate emotional distress. The pilot involves weekly group rides combined with guided conversation sessions, with the goal of potentially establishing the program as a permanent social prescription resource.
