Cycling routes gain popularity in Achterhoek and Waasland

Various cycling regions in the Low Countries are gaining prominence for their diverse terrain and specialized routes. In the Achterhoek region of the Netherlands, a growing network of sand roads, tractor paths, and gravel strips has established the area as a major destination for gravel biking enthusiasts.

The Achterhoek features routes ranging from short hilly rides in Montferland to bikepacking adventures exceeding 300 kilometers. A notable annual event in the region is the Strade Bianche Achterhoek, organized by the Lochem cycling club De Paaschberg, which offers routes of 75, 110, and 150 kilometers.

In Belgium, the Wase Kronkels route offers a less crowded alternative to the Flemish Ardennes. Starting in the village of Daknam in the Waasland region, this 42.7-kilometer route primarily follows paved roads with approximately 13% unpaved sections. The route passes through landscapes including the Daknamse Meersen and the Fondatie van Boudelo.
