Argentina and Uruguay brace for severe storms on July 31
The Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN) issued an orange alert for the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA) and yellow alerts for large parts of Argentina as a cyclogenesis and low‑pressure system moves across the region on July 31. Over ten provinces, including Buenos Aires, Santa Fe, Entre Ríos, Córdoba and La Pampa, face severe thunderstorms with heavy rain, hail, intense lightning and wind gusts that may reach 90 km/h, with higher gusts in mountainous zones. The Instituto Uruguayo de Meteorología (Inumet) warned that Uruguay will also experience strong winds and 60–80 mm of rain. Municipalities such as San Fernando and Quilmes have deployed emergency crews, cleared drainage systems and issued precautionary measures, urging residents to stay indoors, secure objects and avoid outdoor activities. Precipitation totals are expected between 30 mm and 80 mm, with possible local exceedances, and the most intense period is forecast for the late afternoon and night of July 31, improving on Saturday.
