Severe Storm System Triggers Nationwide Alerts Across Argentina

A low‑pressure system moving eastward from the Pacific is expected to generate cyclogenesis over central Argentina between July 30 and August 1. The Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN) issued yellow and orange storm alerts for more than ten provinces, with the Buenos Aires province and the Greater Buenos Aires area under orange alerts.

Forecasts anticipate rainfall of 30‑80 mm, and in some localities more than 100 mm, accompanied by wind gusts that may reach 90‑100 km/h, possible hail and intense lightning. The SMN warned of strong thunderstorms, intense electrical activity and rapid accumulations of rain in short periods.

Municipalities such as San Fernando activated emergency crews, cleared drainage systems, and posted detailed precautionary advice: stay indoors, secure balconies and outdoor objects, avoid travel, and keep drainage channels clear. Uruguay’s meteorological institute Inumet also warned that the same system could bring 60‑80 mm of rain and severe winds to parts of Argentina. Authorities across the affected provinces urged the public to follow these safety measures until the system moves northeast on Saturday.
