Welsh Government set to take control of Cymru Tech Park planning
Welsh Government planning inspectors are reviewing a request to call in the hybrid planning application for the proposed Cymru Tech Park near Newtown, Powys. If approved, the Welsh Government could remove the decision from Powys County Council and determine the application itself.
The hybrid application, submitted in June by Powys County Council and the NPTC Group of Colleges, seeks permission for the first phase of the development – an advanced manufacturing centre, a Green Skills Academy, business units and a new access road. Backers claim the scheme could support about 370 jobs.
Opposition has formed under the name No to Cymru Tech Park Newtown, raising concerns about increased traffic, loss of green fields, proximity to homes and doubts over the promised economic benefits. Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council has recognised both potential benefits, such as job creation and retaining local talent, and the drawbacks, urging that resident concerns be fully addressed. An application to have the Welsh Government call in the proposal was lodged on 17 July and is currently under initial processing.
