Cyndi Lauper criticizes music industry executives for stifling creativity

Singer Cyndi Lauper has criticized music industry executives and shareholders, labeling them ‘greedy and shortsighted’ for their impact on the creative process. In an interview with Billboard, the 73-year-old artist argued that corporate pressure to replicate massive commercial successes undermines genuine creativity.

Lauper cited Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ as an example, noting that when the album sold an unprecedented 35 million copies, industry figures responded with charts predicting similar growth for the following year rather than recognizing the achievement as a unique phenomenon. She remarked, ‘You’re not making a car,’ emphasizing that artistic success cannot be manufactured on demand like a mechanical product.

Beyond the music industry, Lauper expressed concerns regarding the rising costs in Manhattan, suggesting that corporate influence and high expenses are making creative hubs like Greenwich Village less vibrant. She warned that ‘if you squeeze people dry, you wreck it,’ referring to the exhaustion of creative talent under constant commercial demand.
