Cyprus achieves historic medal record at Mediterranean Games

Cyprus achieved a historic performance at the 20th Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy, securing a total of 18 medals, including 7 gold medals. This result placed the nation 11th in the overall medal standings among 26 participating countries.

Key contributors to the success included Marios Georgiou, who won two gold medals in artistic gymnastics (individual all-around and pommel horse) and one silver in the parallel bars, and Kalia Antoniou, who secured two gold medals in the 50m and 100m freestyle swimming events. Other gold medalists included Filippa Fotopoulou in long jump, Iosif Kesidis in hammer throw, and Sofia Asvesta in judo.

The Cyprus Olympic Committee expressed immense pride in the delegation, which consisted of 145 athletes competing in 24 sports. The committee noted that this achievement, following the nation's performance at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, demonstrates the significant progress and international competitiveness of Cypriot sports.
