Cyprus agriculture department assesses storm damage

Inspectors from the Department of Agriculture in Cyprus are currently conducting field assessments to evaluate damage caused by a severe storm last Saturday. The storm, characterized by heavy hail and strong winds, has impacted vineyards and seasonal crops.

Andreas Grigoriou, Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, stated that once the damage is recorded and the extent is estimated, the government will proceed with calculating necessary compensations under existing plans. He noted that the country frequently experiences such extreme weather events.

In the Paphos district, significant damage was reported in areas ranging from Argaka to Pomo. Local officials, including the Mayor of Polis Chrysochous, noted damage to greenhouses and solar photovoltaic installations. In Agia Marina Chrysochous, officials reported that while the rain was beneficial, the winds caused damage to several greenhouses, residential roofs, and solar facilities, particularly affecting crops that were in the pre-production stage.
