Cyprus and France defense agreement moves to parliament
The Republic of Cyprus has submitted a bill to its parliament for the approval of a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) with France. The agreement, originally signed on June 8, 2026, by Cypriot Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas and French Armed Forces Minister Catherine Vautrin, aims to strengthen military cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The agreement covers several key areas, including military training, joint exercises, defense technologies, equipment procurement, and logistical support. It establishes specific procedures for the use of military facilities, the temporary deployment of personnel, and the movement of French warships and military aircraft through Cypriot airspace and ports.
Under the terms of the accord, any military operations, activities to maintain public order, or missions related to national sovereignty require prior written consent from the host country. All movements of personnel, equipment, and munitions must comply with local legislation and permit requirements.
