Cyprus authorities seize large quantities of untaxed tobacco
Cyprus customs authorities conducted two separate operations on October 1, 2026, targeting the smuggling of untaxed tobacco products.
At Paphos Airport, officials intercepted a British passport holder traveling to Manchester. A search of the passenger's luggage revealed 175 cartons of cigarettes. The packaging lacked required health warnings in Greek and Turkish, as well as mandatory security features and traceability codes. The passenger was arrested for flagrant offenses but was later released after paying a €5,000 settlement. The seized goods are scheduled for destruction.
In a separate incident, authorities raided a commercial premises in the Paralimni–Protaras area following a tip-off. Customs officers at the Deryneia Crossing Point identified large quantities of untaxed tobacco, including 54 cartons of cigarettes, three cartons of heated tobacco, and 12 packs of rolling tobacco. The owner of the premises was arrested and subsequently released after agreeing to an out-of-court settlement.
